The Big East schedule was released on Wednesday and as the Hartford Courant pointed out, UConn is still lobbying for eligibility in the Big East Tournament.
UConn listed the conference tournament on their schedule when it was released to the public, however, the Huskies are banned from any postseason play in 2013 due to low APR scores.
Throughout last season, it appeared that the Huskies would face the postseason ban when the numbers were officially released and that turned out to be the case. UConn appealed the NCAA ruling, but lost and will thus play for a Big East regular season championship at the very most.
In addition, one day after the Big East schedule was released, reports surfaced that UConn basketball head coach Jim Calhoun was still mulling a decision on his future and could decide within the next two weeks whether or not to continue his career or retire from the game.
UConn athletic director Manuel Warde and president Susan Herbst are still hoping to get Big East officials to reconsider the Huskies’ Big East Tournament ban. The NCAA ruling also bars the Huskies from competing in the Big Dance and all other postseason events.
The Huskies are banking on an eventual appeal with more recent scores that they’re hoping could reverse the conference’s action. However, this is a long shot for the school and program.
The Huskies return a talented back court with Shabazz Napier, Ryan Boatright, and incoming freshman guard Omar Calhoun, yet there is no doubt that UConn’s lineup will have a new feel to it after last year’s group failed to live up to early season expectations.
Led by Kemba Walker, UConn won the 2011 National Championship, but the Huskies were eliminated in the Round of 64 after a free fall in Big East play a season ago.
