The Dallas Cowboys have a golden opportunity to start fresh and become a playoff contender once again, but it won’t happen. The Indianapolis Colts fired Vice Chairman Bill Polian on Monday, meaning one of the NFL’s top executives is unemployed. The Cowboys desperately need someone like Polian to come in and get whip this franchise into shape from a personnel standpoint, but stubborn team owner Jerry Jones will never admit it.
Polian was hired by the Colts in December of 1997. His first order of business was to draft Peyton Manning with the first overall pick in the 1998 NFL draft. Needless to say, that worked out well. Over a decade later, Manning’s career is in jeopardy, the primary reason why Polian was fired.
The Cowboys already have a good core group of players in place and several young stars who broke out this season. Polian could turn this team into a Super Bowl champ in no time, but Jones won’t hire him.
Jones continues to play with the Cowboys; the team is his personal $1.8 billion toy. Hiring somebody like Polian would mean no more spotlight for Jerry and we all know that wouldn’t last long.
The last brilliant football mind to run this team was responsible for three Super Bowl titles in the early 1990s, but Jones ran Jimmy Johnson out of town because he was deservingly receiving all the credit for the Cowboys’ success. The same thing would happen with Polian in Dallas.
If Jerry Jones had any sense whatsoever, Polian would have been the Cowboys’ new general manager by the end of the day Monday. Instead, Dallas will continue to wonder why these .500 and near-.500 seasons continue to haunt the franchise.
Al Davis died in sheer misery last year while his Oakland Raiders floundered in failure. The same will happen to Jerry Jones one day. The Cowboys will never get over the hump unless Jones hires a general manager. The primary candidate is literally being delivered to Dallas on a silver platter, but Jones will frown and turn up his nose at it like a spoiled child at the dinner table.
