Fantasy Football Week 12 Waiver Wire Pickup: TE Jermaine Gresham

Cincinnati Bengals tight end Jermaine Gresham only had two receptions for 13 yards on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, but they both went for touchdowns and he managed to post his first double-digit fantasy outing (ESPN standard scoring) of the season. With fellow tight end Tyler Eifert (elbow) out since Week 1, and possibly out for the season, should fantasy football owners expect more from Gresham over the rest of the season?

Week 12 does not look favorable for Gresham, as the Houston Texans have allowed just 11 receptions to tight ends over their last four games and just three touchdowns to the position all season. Even owners that have Greg Olsen and Heath Miller on a bye in Week 12 can find quite a few better options that Gresham.

A Week 13 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is slightly better, with Tampa Bay entering Week 11 in the middle of the pack against tight ends. But they have allowed more than 50 yards to the position just once in their last five games, while not allowing a touchdown to a tight end since Week 4.

The Bengals face the Pittsburgh Steelers twice from Week 14-Week 17, including the regular season finale that may not be relevant in some fantasy leagues. The Steelers have allowed a touchdown to a tight end in four of the last five games entering their Monday night matchup with the Tennessee Titans, but that stands out as the only reason they entered Week 11 in the bottom half of the league against the position.

Gresham’s remaining two matchups are tough (Cleveland Browns-Week 15) and easy (Denver Broncos-Week 16), as the Browns entered Week 11 allowing 5.0 fantasy points to tight ends (tied for fifth-fewest in the league, ESPN scoring) and the Broncos entered the week allowing the fifth-most fantasy points to the position.

Gresham is available in 96 percent of Yahoo! leagues right now, and I don’t see that changing dramatically this week. He may be worth a speculative add as a TE2 in very deep leagues, but attempting to rely on Gresham as anything more than that is asking for disappointment.
