After getting what looked to be little interest across the league, Terrell Owens signed with the Seattle Seahawks in the hopes of reviving his NFL career and further bolstering what will surely be a Hall of Fame resume once he retires. Retirement may now be a step closer for Owens, as the Seahawks released him on Sunday in the first round of roster cut-downs around the league.
Owens’ looked good physically, proving he was over the ACL tear he suffered late in the 2010 season that kept him out of the league for all of last season. But drops were an issue, as they have been throughout his career even in his best years. He will turn 39 in early December, so it’s fair to wonder if his career is simply over if the Seahawks were willing to cut ties with him given the lack of proven options they have at wide receiver.
Owens may get some interest from teams as we get closer to Week 1, and any team in need of a wide receiver should get some mention as a potential destination for him. But his reputation as a bad teammate and a divisive locker room presence will definitely turn some teams off, and the teams he has already played for during his 15 NFL seasons can automatically be crossed off the list. Except perhaps for the Dallas Cowboys, who can never be totally ruled out to make a big move with Jerry Jones in the owner’s suite.
The Minnesota Vikings may show some level of interest in adding a proven commodity at wide receiver, especially with Jerome Simpson being suspended for the first three weeks of the regular season. However, the overall makeup of their offense has tilted toward young players over the last couple seasons and Owens would obviously not fit that mold. It would certainly be a low-risk maneuver for any team to bring Owens aboard since he is no position to make big demands.
If Owens chooses to give up his attempt at a comeback, he would retire with 1,078 receptions (sixth all-time), 15,934 receiving yards (second all-time) and 156 touchdowns (fourth all-time). He is a sure-fire Hall of Famer, but with the queue of worthy wide receivers looking backed up with Cris Carter and Tim Brown currently awaiting induction Owens may have to wait his turn once he becomes eligible.
