Chicago Cubs Hiring Joe Maddon Is a Bad Decision

With the end of the 2014 season, the Chicago Cubs will be reevaluating their roster in order to prepare for next year. One thing the Cubs have been looking into is hiring successful manager Joe Maddon. As attractive as this move seems to Chicago’s fanbase, it may not be the smartest decision for the Cubs brass to make.

Even though Maddon had a successful tenure with the Tampa Bay Rays, it may not be in the club’s best interest to pursue him. First of all, Rick Renteria did a fantastic job in putting the young Starlin Castro back on track offensively. This in and of itself should be enough to allow the first-year manager a shot at his second season. Secondly, it wouldn’t exactly be a smooth transition for the young Cub roster to go through three different managers in three years.

The pros to signing Maddon are that he is great with young players and has had great success in one of the toughest divisions in baseball. The Cubs are heading toward a very similar company model to what Tampa has been doing over the years. They are focused on building from within and locking those prospects up while they are young. However, when it comes to managing young players, they need as stable of an environment as possible when trying to learn how to succeed at the major league level.  Therefore, if the Cubs do end up signing Maddon to manage their team, then they will inevitably put their young players in a very precarious position.
