In the aftermath of his latest unfortunate foray into social media and political statements, baseball analyst Curt Schilling was fired by ESPN on Wednesday.
Schilling shared an insensitive transgender meme on his Facebook page on Monday, along with some comments about the issue. He then made it worse on Tuesday via his blog page, by suggesting that anyone that was offended by his offering an opinion was the bigger problem.
“Let’s make one thing clear right upfront,” he wrote. “If you get offended by ANYTHING in this post, that’s your fault, all yours.” He added: “This latest brew ha ha is beyond hilarious. I didn’t post that ugly picture. I made a comment about the basic functionality of men’s and women’s restrooms, period.”
During an appearance on WEEI in Boston earlier on Wednesday, here’s some of what Schilling had to say:
“To be in a place where people actually believe I’m a racist or I’m transphobic says to me that something has gone horribly askew somewhere,”
Schilling is absolutely clueless about the importance of public perception in his job as an analyst, as he has repeatedly shown. To make things worse, his son Grant took to Facebook to defend him on Tuesday. A son having to defend his father for being an insensitive idiot is something the elder Schilling should be ashamed of, and I hope he is.
Schilling probably should have been fired before Wednesday, but he left ESPN absolutely no choice but to do it immediately after the events of the week.
