He may never be a go-to option for the Los Angeles Lakers, but rookie center Tarik Black is quickly proving that he’s a player worth keeping around.
As the Lakers watched their 2014-15 season suffer an early collapse, they added Black to the roster with the hope of injecting some much-needed energy and depth to the front court. What they got was much more than they could have imagined, and it’s boding very well for Black’s future in the NBA.
Since joining the Lakers, Black has played in 60 games while averaging 5.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, compiling a 57.1 field goal percent during the process. Not only is his field goal percentage best among all rookies, but his ability to clean the boards and throw down monstrous dunks has certainly raised his stock significantly in the Lakers’ eyes.
He seemed like a long shot when the Lakers first brought him aboard, but Black has quickly proven his long-term value. Hence, head coach Byron Scott has made it clear he expects the Kansas product back in 2015-16.
Despite the pitiful outcome of their season, the Lakers have done a great job of uncovering a couple of hidden gems. Point guard Jordan Clarkson looks like he could have a future as a starter in Tinseltown, and Black is a quality big man who brings energy and depth to the roster.
What the Lakers do with their first-round pick in the 2015 NBA Draft will significantly shape Black’s role with the team. Even if they end with a big man such as Karl-Anthony Towns or Jahlil Okafor, there will certainly be a spot on the bench with Black’s name on it.
One way or another, the future is bright for Black. This season has been an excellent indicator of success for the rookie, and you better believe the Lakers see him as part of their plan moving forward.
