Draft night stands as the highlight of the Minnesota Timberwolves‘ offseason, with the selection of Karl-Anthony Towns No. 1 overall and a trade back into the first round to acquire former local high school star Tyus Jones. Flip Saunders is building a promising group of young players, but having a few veterans with difficult contracts has prevented Minnesota from making a serious foray into free agency this offseason.
The Timberwolves have added one other new player this summer, as they agreed to a three-year deal with 6’10” Serbian forward Nemanja Bjelica. The reigning Euroleague MVP, while playing for Fenerbahce in Turkey, Bjelica was originally acquired via a draft night trade with the Washington Wizards in 2010 and he spent the three seasons prior to last season in Spain. Bjelica looks likely to be a backup at both forward spots for the Timberwolves, even if Saunders is unwilling to slot him into any one position right now.
It was considered a foregone conclusion, but Minnesota officially agreed to terms on a two-year contract with forward Kevin Garnett on July 11. Garnett played just five games after being re-acquired in February, so his greatest contribution going forward will be as a mentor and veteran example for young players like Towns, Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine and Gorgui Dieng. I don’t think the Timberwolves needed to pay what they did (two years, $16 million, per Jon Krawczynski of The Associated Press) for the assumed intangibles Garnett will bring, but that’s another discussion for another day.
Adding a notable veteran free agent would not fit with Minnesota’s plan to focus on younger players, even if they had the salary cap space to do so. It’s hard to be critical of the offseason moves that Saunders has spearheaded to this point, including the recent trade of forward Chase Budinger to the Indiana Pacers, and inactivity (forced or otherwise) on the free agent market is not always a bad thing.
