The Wichita State Shockers made a run to the Final Four last year, but they may be even better this season. That is scary for the rest of the nation. With that in mind, are the Shockers worthy of a No. 1 seed?
Based off of their performance in last year’s NCAA tournament, why not? They proved that they can beat the best teams in college basketball on the biggest stage. Plus, Wichita State is undefeated and ranked in the top 10. If they finish the season off undefeated, there is no doubt that they would get a No. 1 seed.
How could they be denied? The MVC may be a mid-major conference, but there are a couple of teams in it that are good enough to make this year’s Big Dance. Going through the conference schedule untouched would be quite the achievement. I am not saying it will happen, but it would be crazy if it did.
Even if Wichita State has one or two losses at the end of the season, it is still worthy of a No. 1 seed. That is as along as it wins the regular season title and the MVC tournament.
The Shockers have not beaten a single ranked opponent, but they have beaten the likes of BYU, Saint Louis, Tennessee and Alabama.
Gonzaga was a mid-major last year–still is–and earned a No. 1 seed, so the same thing could be the case with the Shockers.
Not only do they have a solid resume, but they have a very talented team that can challenge anyone in the country. Those two things alone should mean that this team is worthy of a No. 1 seed–if it can finish the rest of the season on a very strong note.
