John Calipari loves the spotlight. While many college basketball fans around the country hate Calipari, either because of who he is or because he’s the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, those same fans would have to admit that no one plays today’s college basketball game as well as Calipari.

Take this week as an example. Calipari held his annual camp at the University of Kentucky, and he had all seven of his departing players at the camp as counselors for at least one day each. Calipari also held a press conference, keeping himself and his team in the eyes of the media despite the fact that college basketball is nowhere near the focus of the sports world at the beginning of August.

Calipari seems to be everywhere, no matter what time of year it is. He threw out the first pitch for the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night. He uses social media more effectively than any coach in the country and he seems to have a unique way of connecting with recruits.

Kentucky’s 2014-15 season will live in college basketball history. The Wildcats won 38 games in a row, tied their own record for most wins in a season and went to their fourth Final Four in the last five seasons. And while the Big Blue came up short of their championship goal, the 2014-15 Wildcats will be remembered forever.

For his part, Calipari does a tremendous job of keeping himself and his team in the spotlight. Whether it’s saying he might coach another 15 years or its holding an alumni game to bring celebrated players back to Lexington, Calipari knows how to use the media and social media to advance his cause.
