As a college basketball fan, do you ever just sit back and wonder what it would be like if this year’s version of Michael Gbinije would have actually played for the Duke Blue Devils? Just take a moment and think about that seriously. Gbinije is his own man, though, and when he visited the Syracuse Orange campus, he decided he would not return to Durham.

Honestly, if you’re a Duke Fan, it would have been nice to see; but as a basketball fan, it’s just as fun watching this young man put the Orange on his back and help carry the load. So far, he hasn’t averaged as many rebounds as he did last year; other than that, he’s improved in every statistical category each year.

Gbinije dropped 23 in a loss to the Georgetown Hoyas. No shame there. So far, he’s averaging just under 20 for the season, but he’s hit 50 percent of his shots from the three-point line. Some guys aren’t even hitting that from the floor. Thirty-one shots from deep have dropped for him. There are entire teams that haven’t done that and still more that haven’t hit too many more than that.

The only visible weakness that can be seen so far is free throw shooting. He may be lighting it up, but if he doesn’t improve from the charity stripe, he may end up being a casualty in crunch time.

Syracuse already has two losses on the schedule and they haven’t even reached the difficult part of their schedule yet. Once the ACC schedule begins, the Orange does need to be worried about whether they can make clutch free throws at the end of games.

Aside from that, it’s been a joy to watch this guy grow up, and it should be interesting to see him at the next level.
