The Maryland Terrapins are looking for someone to replace three-year starter C.J. Brown this offseason at quarterback. Their leading contender, senior Caleb Rowe, missed all of spring practice recovering from a torn ACL, leaving some doubt about how effective the offense would be this fall. Terps fans can put some of that unease to rest, however, now that Daxx Garman has announced he will be joining the program as a graduate transfer.

Last season, Garman played in nine games, starting eight, for the Oklahoma State Cowboys where he put his incredible arm strength on display. He threw for 2,041 yards while completing 54.9 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His ability to stretch the field in the passing game provided a spark for Oklahoma State, though he eventually lost his starting job to freshman Mason Rudolph, prompting the veteran signal caller to seek a transfer after his graduation.

With Garman in the fold, Randy Edsall can be sure that he will have at least one quarterback (in the event Rowe doesn’t come back 100 percent right away) that can keep the aerial attack afloat. For a team like Maryland, whose strength is the explosive speed and depth of their receiving corps, plugging a quarterback in that can stretch the field is paramount to their success.

While the team will miss the big-play ability of Stefon Diggs, the cupboard is far from bare at receiver in 2015. Levern Jacobs returns from a season-long suspension in 2014 and is a proven commodity after leading the team with 640 yards receiving in 2013. His younger brother Taivon Jacobs returns to the field as well after a knee injury kept him sidelined all of last season. Also look for Marcus Leak to have an expanded role in the offense this year after posting 20 receptions in 2014 following a very strong spring that culminated with six catches, 132 yards, and three touchdowns in the spring game.

Daxx Garman isn’t going to walk into the Maryland locker room and have the starting job handed to him, but having a quarterback with his experience competing for the job will make the entire unit better. At the very least, Terps’ fans won’t have to worry about Rowe’s recovery from the ACL quite as much as they now have a viable starter in Garman to take the lead.
