With an open roster spot at the conclusion of offseason work, the Minnesota Vikings may look to add someone between now and the start of training camp. They could add competition at guard, safety or defensive end with some level of priority, as outlined here by Andrew Krammer of 1500 ESPN.com.
One of the veteran safeties Krammer mentions is Bernard Pollard, who missed the final 11 games of last season with a ruptured Achilles’ and was granted his release by the Tennessee Titans in early March. Vikings’ defensive backs coach Jerry Gray was the defensive coordinator in Tennessee from 2011-2013, which makes it easy to envision a fit for Pollard in Minnesota since his first season with the Titans was Gray’s last as coordinator. But I think the Vikings have better internal options to play alongside Harrison Smith, and they should stay far away from a 30-year old safety who is coming off a major injury.
Pollard is highly thought of as a physical “in the box” safety, and he has six seasons with at least 90 total tackles over the course of his career. But he is not considered to be very good in coverage, and adding essentially an extra linebacker to the mix at safety is not something the Vikings should be looking to do.
On the surface, the Vikings’ don’t have a lot of great options as they look to find a suitable starting strong safety. But Robert Blanton started 13 games and had 105 total tackles last season (71 solo), while second-year man Antone Exum is another year removed from a torn right ACL in January of 2013 and could be a bigger factor this year.
Taylor Mays had a history with head coach Mike Zimmer from their time together in Cincinnati, and the Vikings signed him in March before releasing him in mid-June. Pollard would be in line for a bigger role than Mays was, as a likely starter, but if the Vikings decide to sign another safety with ties to someone on their coaching staff I think they will be setting themselves up for disappointment.
