The New Orleans Saints held the 13th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, and when they were on the clock, most teams and analysts expected the Saints to take a defensive player. The team had a very weak defensive unit in 2014, but the team surprised everyone by taking an upgrade for their offensive line. The team took a massive 6-foot-7 lineman by the name of Andrus Peat.
Peat was considered to be one of the better offensive tackles in the draft. Peat was a great blocker during his college career at Stanford, and at times he looked like a top-five pick. Thanks to his size, he should be able to excel in the run game and he should be a road grader at either the tackle or guard position during his rookie season.
However, Peat was not very consistent during his college career, and sometimes he did have issues with both pass blocking and run blocking. This inconsistency was ultimately what kept him out of the top ten. Still, Peat has all the tools necessary to develop into a solid left tackle, and the Saints were smart to take him to improve their running game.
This offseason, Peat hasn’t been able to participate in much of OTAs. The main reason for this is that he couldn’t participate in workouts until he was finished with his academic year at Stanford. He didn’t make his first appearance until mid-June. Once he got there, he was able to impress coaches with his size and skills, as was expected of the first rounder. He really is a solid player, and he may be a starter for the team by Week 1.
Peat is battling for a starting position with the team right now, and I have to believe that he will be able to win one of them. Peat is battling for the starting right tackle position, and also the starting left guard position as well. While he may not win the right tackle job over Zach Strief, he should be able to beat out Tim Lelito for the guard position. I fully expect Peat to start; it just depends where he will fit in on the team’s offensive line.
Peat is definitely going to have some sort of impact for the Saints this season. Whether he plays at guard or tackle, he will improve the team’s offensive line and he will be very important to the team’s offense, which figures to feature a run-oriented attack this year. Peat should have a good rookie year, but down the road he could be even better. He should be a solid tackle for the Saints for the next decade.
