After allowing 384.0 yards per game last year (31st in the league), the New Orleans Saints made it an offseason priority to add talent to defensive coordinator Rob Ryan’s unit. One fairly recognizable name that the Saints added was cornerback Kyle Wilson, who was a first-round pick (29th overall) of the New York Jets in 2010, but his role was greatly reduced in 2014 and the Jets willingly let him leave as a free agent.
With Brandon Browner also brought aboard in free agency to start opposite Keenan Lewis, Wilson was immediately slated for a nickel back role upon signing with the Saints. More cornerback depth was added in the draft (P.J. Williams and Damian Swann), and reports out of OTAs suggest that Wilson was outperformed by (and eventually replaced by) CFL transplant Delvin Breaux as the Saints’ first-team nickel corner. New Orleans surely has no plans to give up on 2014 second-round pick Stanley Jean-Baptiste so quickly, after he had a very limited role as a rookie, so his roster spot is virtually guaranteed if he shows anything during training camp.
ESPN.com’s Mike Triplett has suggested that Wilson needs to win nickel/slot corner duties to stay on the Saints’ roster. If the Saints keep six cornerbacks going into the regular season, which is a safe assumption based on what Triplett outlines, Wilson is likely to be on the outside looking in for a roster spot if he doesn’t show significant improvement during training camp and preseason games.
This could easily be a make-or-break training camp for Wilson, as he looks to turn his career around and prove he can still become a difference maker. But he may simply be a victim of a numbers game in New Orleans, regardless of his performance during camp, as the team focuses on keeping younger corners with more upside.
Wilson will not have a starting job handed to him at this point, but the overall need for cornerback talent around the league should allow him to continue to find opportunities. If he is able to stay healthy through training camp, and assuming the Saints do cut him at some point, Wilson should have little trouble finding a new team heading into the regular season.
