The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Blake Bortles to be their quarterback of the future last year, and they planned to keep him on the bench for as long as possible. Chad Henne opened the season as the starting quarterback, but the Jaguars scored just 27 points over the first two games and the veteran signal caller did not put up particularly good numbers (38-for-71 for 459 yards with three touchdowns and one interception combined). Bortles took over after halftime of Week 3 against the Indianapolis Colts, and Henne did not attempt another pass all season.
Jacksonville is firmly committed to Bortles as their starting quarterback now and going forward, as they should be even with his struggles at times last season. Henne is back in place as No. 2 on the depth chart for the final year of his two-year deal, and barring something completely unforeseen he will not face significant competition for the role during training camp. Stephen Morris and Jeff Tuel will compete for the third spot on the depth chart during camp and preseason games, and the loser could land on Jacksonville’s practice squad.
Henne’s perceived value as a veteran mentor for Bortles exceeds anything he is capable of on the field at this point, and all indications are he embraced that role after being benched last season. The fact he started 19 games for Jacksonville during the 2012 and 2013 seasons tells you exactly how bad things were for the team at that point, and Henne’s NFL future is clearly as a backup no matter where his career goes from here.
Bortles may benefit from seeing more action than a starting quarterback typically sees in preseason games, but a better plan for the Jaguars is to limit how much he plays and make sure he enters the regular season fully healthy. That’s where the other quarterbacks come in, and Henne should get plenty of opportunities to build rapport with Jacksonville’s pass catchers in case he has to play during the regular season.
Henne is not part of Jacksonville’s long-term plans, but training camp should help him continue to transition into a role as a veteran backup. He is the only one that is even close to a viable option behind Bortles right now, so Henne would have to go down with a severe injury to not start the season No. 2 on the depth chart for the Jaguars.
