If not for his sudden retirement after the 1998 season, Barry Sanders would surely be the NFL‘s all-time leading rusher. After a 2,000-yard season in 1997 his production fell in his final season (1,491 rushing yards), but Sanders still finished fourth in the league in rushing yards and could have remained productive for a few more seasons.

Now 47 years old, Sanders is in London this week doing some promotional work. His old team, the Detroit Lions, is playing in London on Sunday and Sanders said he still thinks about playing football.

Via MLive.com:

“It is fun to think about, when you’re sitting over there on the sideline, and you don’t have to actually suit up. Then you can fantasize all you want to, I guess, and it’s fun to think about. But me, personally? I don’t think I could (still perform). Guys look terribly big out there.”

Fellow former NFL running back Herschel Walker has said he thinks he could still play, but Sanders doesn’t share the same sentiment about his own abilities.

“I doubt it very seriously,” Sanders, now 47, said at Tottenham Hotspur FC’s practice facility. “I don’t know (whether I could still get it done), but I doubt it.

Serious talk of a comeback by Sanders is over a decade from possibly bearing fruit, but those of us that remember him terrorizing opposing defenses can still be in awe of what he did on the field.
