5 Backup NFL QBs Who Should Be Starting Right Now

There's an old saying: the most popular player on the team is the backup quarterback. Many fanbases get frustrated with their starters. Just ask the Philadelphia Eagles, where many a member of Eagle Nation have chanted for Mark Sanchez. Rather than focus on the obvious choices, here's an introduction to some of the NFL's young guns who have yet to be given a real shot.

Ryan Nassib has completed 80 percent of his passes for his career.

OK, he's only thrown five passes; but don't pay that any attention. Nassib was a standout for Syracuse and was then drafted by the New York Giants in the fourth round of the 2013 draft. Honestly, with some of the guys we see starting around the league, I have no idea why he hasn't been given a shot yet.

4. Aaron Murray, Kansas City Chiefs

Aaron Murray stands at 6-foot-1 and probably may have some issues with seeing over some of the offensive lines in the NFL; but we also complained that Drew Brees and Russell Wilson were vertically challenged. They both have Super Bowls victories. His current coach drafted Kevin Kolb and signed Michael Vick, though; so maybe we need to start by getting him away from the Kansas City Chiefs.

3. Brock Osweiler, Denver Broncos

Brock Osweiler stands at 6-foot-8 and has a cannon. He also has Peyton Manning on his team, so maybe we'll see him next year or at some point in the near future. He's not the most gifted athletically, so there may be a chance that he's in a bit of danger against the exotic blitz packages of the NFL opposition. But, if Brian Hoyer has a starting position in the league, then, dog gone it, so should Osweiler.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were in a bit of trouble against the Arizona Cardinals. Michael Vick was stinking it up, and following a concussion, Landry Jones stepped in and responded by saving the day. Now the following week, he turned around and threw two interceptions -- but he actually had a higher yardage output. Jones has a 93.2 rating on just 41 passes for his career. Have the Steelers found some trade bait or a successor to Ben Roethlisberger?

Jimmy Garoppolo's only flaw is he is the backup for, quite possibly, the greatest player to play the quarterback position. So here's a wild idea: who wouldn't give up too much for Tom Brady? Think of that team that's right on the edge of serious contention and wanted to make a real run. Well, it will never happen that way; but whether Garoppolo gets his shot with the Patriots or another franchise, that team's future is in good hands.
