Eric Weddle Goes After San Diego Chargers' Organization One More Time On Way Out

After the San Diego Chargers did not offer him a contract extension, safety Eric Weddle was sure to hit free agency during the upcoming offseason. With a $10,000 fine for not going into the locker room during the Week 16 game against the Miami Dolphins and instead opting to watch his daughter perform in a dance ceremony, things clearly weren’t ending on a high note.

But the fine for a fairly trivial thing was not the end, as the Chargers placed Weddle on season-ending injured reserve with a groin injury before the regular season finale while suggesting there was no room for him on the flight to Denver for Week 17. All of it qualifies as bush-league on the part of the Chargers, with Weddle’s suggestion (with apparent evidence) that he was healthy enough to play last Sunday, even considering that Weddle should have told coaches he was staying out on the field for halftime of Week 16.

On Monday, Weddle offered one final shot at the Chargers’ organization, via Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Weddle is 31 years old with increasing injury concerns, but prior to missing three games this season (including the controversial Week 17 game) he had played all 16 games in five straight seasons and in six of the last seven seasons. Weddle will surely be one of the most sought after defensive backs on the free agent market this offseason, and whoever signs him is in line to get a highly motivated player.
