Alabama running back Derrick Henry ended his Heisman Trophy-winning season on a high note Monday night with 36 carries for 158 yards and three touchdowns against Clemson in the national title game. He finished his junior season with a SEC single-season record 2,219 yards (5.6 yards per carry) and 28 touchdowns, so it’s no surprise that Henry has declared for the 2016 NFL Draft.

Henry had a huge workload this past season, with a clearly FBS-leading 395 carries (58 more than Christian McCaffrey), so the short shelf life of running backs and his value being at a peak made leaving school a year early a no-brainer. For the sake of comparison, since Henry did play 15 games, the only NFL running back to top 300 carries during this past regular season was Adrian Peterson (327 carries). A lack of production as a pass catcher (11 receptions in 2015) will be a concern for teams at the next level, but Henry will have an opportunity to prove he has an all-around skill set during the pre-draft process.
At 6-foot-3 and 242 pounds, Henry has already drawn some comparisons to former New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs, who was listed at 6-foot-4 and 256 pounds. That comparison suggests a low ceiling for Henry, who may also suffer from comparisons to fellow Alabama product Trent Richardson.
It would be surprising to see Henry drafted in the first round, with questions about his ability to be a functional three-down back at the next level. But he can immediately be considered the second-best running back in the 2016 draft class behind Ezekiel Elliott.
