Each year, there are new playoff teams in the NFL mixed in with the typical contenders. Taking a closer look at how the AFC will shake out in 2016, here is my prediction for the six playoff teams in the conference.
6. Cincinnati Bengals
Getty ImagesThe Bengals lost some key pieces offensively this offseason, most notably offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. But there's still plenty of talent in place, on both sides of the ball, to keep their playoff streak alive.
5. Oakland Raiders
Getty ImagesFive of Oakland's nine losses last season were by six points or less, and it's easy to see some of those results going the other way in 2016. An AFC West title is not out of the question, but the Raiders will at least make a return to the playoffs.
4. Indianapolis Colts
Getty ImagesThe Colts finished 8-8 and just one game behind the Houston Texans last season, as Andrew Luck missed nine games. Better health from Luck is a clear path back to the top of a mediocre division in 2016.
3. Pittsburgh Steelers
Getty ImagesThe timetable for running back Le'Veon Bell's return from a knee injury is a question right now, but the Steelers are still in line to have one of the NFL's best offenses in 2016. An AFC North title and a home Wild Card game is my prediction.
2. Denver Broncos
Getty ImagesThe Broncos are in line for a step back in 2016, with multiple offseason departures thinning the roster. But the key parts of a great defense remain intact, and that's enough to give Denver a chance to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
1. New England Patriots
Getty ImagesEven if Tom Brady actually serves a four-game suspension for Deflategate, the Patriots remain the clear favorite to win the AFC East. As always, a first-round bye is in the cards.
