Oklahoma Sooners Football 2011 Preview: Running Backs
DeMarco Murray departed OU as one of the greatest running backs in Sooner history. However, the problem is, he’s now toting the rock for the Dallas Cowboys and not for the Oklahoma Sooners.
This year, the running back position for OU is very much up in the air, but it is far from devoid of talent.
OU has become a sort of Running Back U. Steve Owens, Billy Sims, Quentin Griffin, Adrian Peterson and Murray are just a few of the great running backs that have come through OU’s great program. There is always a talented running back waiting in the wings in Norman.
This year is no different except for the fact that there are just too many running backs that are ready to take over the starting running back position. Head coach Bob Stoops has already said that the approach will be a by committee approach with at least three running backs and possibly four rotating during a game.
The lead candidate is sophomore Brennan Clay, a more bruising back that ran for 127 yards last season in limited action. Injuries were a large factor in Clay’s limited action last season as well as the emergence of Roy Finch. Finch is also going to be used in the slot as a receiver. His speed will be a huge factor for the OU offense.
Finch was the second leading rusher for OU last year with 398 yards.
Also in the mix is Jonathan Miller, a sophomore who didn’t see action last season, and true freshman Brandon Williams. Both are extremely talented, but still have some things to learn before they see consistent playing time.
OU is very deep and very young at the running back position, but the talent pool is off the charts. There will not be any problems with finding capable running backs to put on the field.
However, the key will be figuring out how to establish a consistent running game with this new committee approach.
