Detroit Pistons Decide to Part Ways With Coach Monty Williams

During the first season after signing a lucrative six-year, $78.5 million contract with Detroit Pistons last year, Monty Williams had the worst record in NBA history as his team finished at 14-68.

The most recent coaching dismissal will leave this position open for the time being. This comes right on the heels of a rough patch for Williams who just led Phoenix Suns to NBA finals in 2021 and was named NBA Coach of the Year in 2022 before he was fired by Suns in 2023.

The Pistons had 28 consecutive losses in a single season, which is the new NBA record for worst performance. They changed their players 31 times and employed different combinations of players 36 times, with 39 double figure deficits to their names.

Cleveland, Detroit, and Lakers are the only teams without head coaches after the recent firing of Bickerstaff, Casey, and Vogel respectively. In addition to that, this move comes right before the NBA draft where Pistons have the fifth pick overall. The team will be built around its young core–Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren who showed some potential despite a difficult season.
