Patrick O’Sullivan led the Phoenix Coyotes to an impressive 7-4 win over the Anaheim Ducks in both teams’ preseason opener on Tuesday night in Anaheim. The game was the first game of back-to-back pre-season games at the Honda Center.
The two teams put fairly young teams on the ice which is typical of this stage of the the pre-season. Ducks newly acquired forward, Andrew Cogliano and rookie Kyle Palmieri each had a goal and an assist for the Ducks in the loss. Cogliano was traded from the Edmonton Oilers to Anaheim in July for a 2nd round draft pick in 2013. Palmieri played in just 10 games for the Ducks last season after being recalled from Syracuse.
Phoenix forward O’Sullivan led the Yote’s offensive onslaught with two goals and a pair of assists. Andy Miele, the 2011 Hobey Baker Award winner and USA Hockey’s 2010-11 college player of the year, also made a good impression scoring a goal and adding two assists. Brett Hextall and Maxim Goncharov each added a goal and an assist for Phoenix.
Former Duck, Curtis McElhinney signed a two-way deal with the Coyotes in August and made 20 saves in just 2 periods of play.
Hextall got a little lucky when he’s shot from behind the goal bounced off O’Sullivan and went in to break a 3-3 tie in the third. O’Sullivan put the game away with two third period goals, including one on the man advantage, to put the game out of reach for the Ducks.
The Ducks will remain in Anaheim to face the San Jose Sharks Wednesday night. I have included the pre-season schedule below.
