Colorado Needs To Do All It Can to Keep Tad Boyle

There are a lot of tempting coaching vacancies around the college basketball landscape, specifically in Illinois and Nebraska. One of the names that has been floated around as a top candidate for the Cornhuskers job has been University of Colorado’s head coach Tad Boyle.

Although Boyle came out and said he is not interested in the position in Lincoln, his name will continue to pop up on top candidates lists for other schools in the future and CU needs to lock him up long-term.

In just two season in Boulder he has already led the program to it’s first back-to-back 20-win season in school history, it’s first conference title in program history and it’s first NCAA Tournament victory since 1997. Let me reiterate, he has done all this in just TWO seasons.

Now, the Buffs have never been a basketball power, not even when they had Chauncey Billups running the point. However, all around Boulder, the feeling is that CU is quietly transitioning from a football school to a basketball school. With all of the success they had this season and a Top-25 recruiting class coming in next season Colorado basketball is officially on the rise and most of the credit has to go to Boyle and his staff.

Colorado already awarded Boyle with a contract extension earlier this season bumping up his base salary by 3% but they will have to do more than that to keep him in Boulder. His current contract has a base salary of only $165,830, one the lowest amongst other traditional power schools coaches salary, but he did earn more than $1 million in incentives from the Buffs’ successful 2012 season.

Athletic Director Mike Bohn is aware of Boyle’s meteoric rise through the coaching ranks and has said that he anticipates having to rework his contract in the future. Here is what he told the Boulder Daily Camera:

“I have great respect for Tad, and he and the entire department are functioning well as a team and I know his commitment to be a Buff is sincere and genuine,” Bohn said. “We will continue to monitor the wonderful progress and growth of the program under his leadership and adapt as necessary.”

Boyle has called the Colorado coaching position as his “dream job” and has treated it that way so far by rejuvenating the entire program. Even though Boyle wants to be here, other big name schools are going to come in offering better facilities for him to work with as well as offering more money. It will be hard for Boyle not to be tempted by these offers in the future. He turned down Texas A&M last season and reportedly turned down Nebraska this season but expect more teams to come calling for Boyle’s services.

If you’re Colorado and you’re Mike Bohn you have to do everything you can to keep Boyle in Boulder because if you don’t you will regret it for a long time.

Colorado, you’ve been warned.
