UMass and head coach Derrick Kellogg have earned the commitment of Western Kentucky transfer Derrick Gordon.

Gordon, who spent one season at WKU before opting to move closer to his New Jersey home, made the decision to join the UMass program on Friday afternoon after visiting the Amherst-campus just a few weeks ago.

Gordon had narrowed his decision down to three A-10 schools, including URI and St. Joseph’s, before ultimately making the call in favor of the Minutemen.

“My relationship with Coach (Derek) Kellogg was huge,” Gordon told CBSSports.com. “He’s so down to earth and I felt like I could talk to him about more than just basketball.”

The 6-foot-2 point guard helped lead the Hilltoppers to the NCAA Tournament this past season, despite finishing the season with a sub .500 record. Western Kentucky was eliminated in the Round of 64 by the Kentucky Wildcats, who eventually went on to win the National Championship.

As for UMass, the Minutemen qualified for the NIT this past March, advancing to Madison Square Garden and the tournament’s semifinal round before falling to Stanford. The Minutemen were led by fellow point guard and one-time transfer, Chaz Williams.

Williams, who is set to be a junior at UMass next season, burst onto the scene in the Atlantic 10 this past season, raising expectations for the Minutemen looking ahead to the 2012-13 season.

Gordon will not be eligible to play for UMass next year per NCAA rules, but will have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in 2013-14.

Gordon averaged 11.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game this past season.
