Marquette Basketball: Golden Eagles Report Potential Violations
Late Thursday night, the Marquette basketball program reported potential violations to the NCAA, but the issues at hand remain undisclosed.
“Recently, during the athletic department’s normal course of business, we discovered information regarding a possible NCAA rules violation involving our men’s basketball program,” Marquette athletic director Larry Williams said. “Marquette University takes these matters seriously. Upon learning the information, we followed established protocols and reported the matter directly to the NCAA.”
As of Thursday night and into Friday, Marquette relayed nothing into comment form other than the fact that they were working with the NCAA in conducting a joint review.
Williams was hired as the school’s athletic director last December and the impending issues may be his biggest challenge to date.
Marquette head coach Buzz Williams, who holds no relation to Larry, has led the program to 96 wins in his first four years in charge.
In 2011-12, the Golden Eagles were 27-8 overall, finishing the year with a 14-4 mark within the Big East.
Marquette was eliminated in the Sweet 16 by Florida and head coach Billy Donovan this past March, and will now move forward without star players Jae Crowder and Darius Johnson-Odom this season.
Since former Marquette head man and current Indiana head coach Tom Crean left the school, Williams has lead the Golden Eagles to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The school’s steak of trips to the Big Dance actually stretches back to 2006, as the program has advanced through for seven straight seasons.
The school will likely make a statement in the near future, commenting on their recent investigation alongside the NCAA.
