Doug Martin: Villanova Assistant Resigns Amid Resume Inaccuracies
Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Doug Martin‘s stint as a Villanova assistant did not last long.

On Saturday afternoon, it was announced that Martin had resigned amid an investigation into his resume. Martin said that he played Division I basketball at UW-Green Bay from 1991-1995. However, Green Bay has no record of Martin ever playing for the school and former head coach Dick Bennett.

Andrew Gavin, the director of athletic communications at UW-Green Bay said, “I do not have a record of a Doug Martin playing here and looked through our stats from each of those years as well.”

Bennett had also come on the record in saying, “he certainly didn’t play for me.”

On his resume to Villanova, Martin claimed he was a four year varsity letter-winner and his LinkedIn profile had offered educational information from both UW-Green Bay and Viterbo University. While UW-Green Bay had no record of a Doug Martin, Viterbo does. Their athletic website lists Martin as a letter-winner from 1990-1994. He scored 222 points in 87 career games.

While Martin’s decision to resign and walk away appears to be a good one, this mystery is seemingly solved. However, for Villanova and head coach Jay Wright, the search will now continue for a new assistant that will fill the spot that Martin held for that short period of time.

Martin, who previously held a coaching position at Paul VI High School (VA), did get a passing notion from Wright upon his resignation. Wright said, “”I have always known Doug to be a good person and coach. He has taken responsibility for his mistake and will move on successfully. We all wish Doug well.”

Villanova is searching to recover from a dismal 2011-12 campaign in which the Wildcats finished 13-19 overall.
