Former Georgia Tech head coach Bobby Cremins is rallying support for second-year head man Brian Gregory.
Cremins, who stepped away from coaching last season at the College of Charleston, spent 15 seasons coaching the Yellow Jackets, including an appearance in the 1990 Final Four.
Now Cremins is lending his help and support for a school that he helped propel onto the national stage.
Gregory, who arrived at Georgia Tech in the spring of 2011, spent eight seasons at Dayton before moving to the ACC. Last season, the Yellow Jackets finished the year at 11-20 overall and 4-12 within the conference, but Georgia Tech is looking to move towards a new era, especially with incoming freshman Robert Carter heading to campus.
“Brian and I were talking and I said now that I’m a part-time employee and I’m not coaching, I would love to give something back to the school that I coached 19 years at and I love,” Cremins told the Associated Press. “This was my baby. This was my life.”
In addition to their Final Four appearance, Cremins helped guide the Yellow Jackets to nine straight NCAA Tournament appearances after beginning his coaching career at Appalachian State.
Georgia Tech will open its new arena on Nov. 9 against Tulane, and Cremins would like to see things at Georgia Tech rebound. Gregory recently offered Cremins a volunteer role following a conversation between the two.
“Georgia Tech will always be a special place in my life until the day I die,” Cremins said. “Now I find the opportunity to support a new coach in a new building. And it’s beautiful. I went on the court recently and I had chills.”
Cremins said he also hopes to be a part of the school’s opening night ceremony.
