Cardinals Won’t Suffer From Brownout in Arizona
So Levi Brown may leave the desert because the Arizona Cardinals aren’t willing to pay him $17 million to help the team give up another 54 sacks in 2012.
Now that is an “offensive” tackle.
The 27-year-old Brown is likely to test the free-agent market, and as bad as he was in the first half of 2011, some are calling him the best free-agent left tackle available.
Fortunately for Brown, the position he plays is one of the most sought-after in the league – so precious that some time is going to give him close to what he wants … and grossly overpay him.
The Cardinals aren’t, which is a good thing. It’d be nice to resign Brown, but losing him isn’t going to be a drastic loss. It would alter their own free-agent strategy, as well as their draft strategy.
Arizona’s best hope would be that Stanford’s Jonathan Martin is destined to be a Cardinal for a while longer and be available with the No. 13 pick in the draft.
The worst-case scenario is that the Cardinals may have to reach for Ohio State’s Mike Adams, whose 19 reps of the 225-pound bench press at the NFL combine last month caused a mild uproar, as did the fact that he is a bit of a character risk.
Adams was one of the five Buckeyes, along with quarterback Terrelle Pryor, to get suspended for five games because of improper benefits. He also was suspended for two games in 2009 for a violation of team rules.
But is that scenario worse than being handcuffed by whatever hefty price tag Brown will cost, keeping the team from using cap space to shore up other needs?
If that’s what Brown can do for you, Arizona, let him go.
