Thursday’s 32-27 loss to the Tennessee Titans seemed to be Kevin Kolb‘s best shot to make a strong case for the starting job at quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals over John Skelton. Unfortunately, Kolb didn’t help his case at all after another disappointing performance in Week 3 of the 2012 NFL preseason.
On paper, Kolb’s 17 of 22 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown may seem impressive at first, but his two interceptions–one of which was returned for a touchdown–show that the quarterback is still having some of the same struggles that were displayed over the team’s first three games of the preseason. Sure, the struggles of the offensive line can be blamed for part of the problem, but the fact is Kolb is entering his second full season with Arizona and he’s yet to show any reasons that he’s worthy of the $63 million deal the organization provided him with when they acquired him from the Philadelphia Eagles prior to last season.
At this pace, there’s a good chance Kolb is going to end up being one of the biggest busts in NFL history–which is odd since he was never even a first-round pick. The Cardinals were desperate enough last season to acquire a starting quarterback and clearly jumped the gun on the lucrative deal they gave Kolb considering he had only started seven career games prior to 2011.
Plus–let’s not forget most of Kolb’s numbers from Week 3 of the preseason came in the second half when Tennessee’s starters had already played in the first half.
