Arizona Diamodnbacks: Justin Upton Laboring Through Tough Start
Baseball isn’t easy. No matter how long one plays the game, it will always be hard.
A good metaphor to think of is college. Each year has two halves, but each half comes with its own unique set of challenges. Even if one were to get through the first year with ease, there’s no guarantee that the next year would be any less of a challenge.
Right fielder Justin Upton didn’t go to college, but he’s learning the lesson through the obstacles of the 2012 season. So far he’s hitting .234 with three home runs, nine RBI and five stolen bases.
“He knows what he’s doing,” Arizona skipper Kurt Gibson said in his pre-game press conference, “he’s trying to stop it.”
He is coming off a season in which he hit over 30 home runs for the first time in his career. However with the expectations that come with a defending divisional championship season, the frustrating rut is doing anyone any favors.
“The key is not to get frustrated with it,” Gibson said. “You run the risk of trying 10 different things and then you’re back to square one.”
With star players like Upton, it’s only a matter of time until he figures it out again. After all, that’s what baseball is all about.
