Rockies Move On Without Braves’ Prado

The rumored trade that was the most exciting happening of the offseason for the Atlanta Braves was finally put down on Saturday night. The Colorado Rockies acquired Marco Scutaro from the Boston Red Sox for a player who isn’t going to be the next Roy Halladay. At best, the Red Sox dumped the salary of Scutaro to fill another hole on their team, with the addition of Cody Ross. The Rockies will shift Scutaro to second base and probably put him in the 2 hole in their lineup.

This is officially a deal solidifying the fact that the Rockies and Braves will NOT be swapping Martin Prado. The Rockies traded Seth Smith a couple weeks ago to the Oakland A’s, which was the first signal that the deal would not happen. The acquisition of Scutaro is definitively a sign that Prado will not be playing in Colorado this upcoming year.

The rumored trade was supposedly Prado for Smith and at a minimum a center field prospect, though there were other reports that the Braves were asking for a pitching prospect. I am uncertain if they were asking for a pitching prospect, CF prospect and Smith, or just one prospect along with Smith.

The Braves, at this point, are much better off with Prado roaming left field. They have no better option and Prado makes the team better. The only way that I could see the team being better without Prado is for them to get a better player in left field. The trade market is not flushed with those players. From what I have seen, the price for players would be much more than the Braves are willing to pay.

As for Prado, I expect him to have a better year this season. If the Braves want to trade him, I think his value will be better after the first couple months of the season.

4 Rants to “Rockies Move On Without Braves’ Prado”

I think part of the problem is that you think everything that I write is my actual opinion. The reality is that sarcasm does not translate well in written form. Trading D-Lowe was the bright spot of the offseason for sure. It happened so fast after the season and nothing overly exciting has happened since then, it almost makes me forget about it. But, you are right. Lowe’s departure made me happy.

As for the hooligans, I have never met the other commentators on the blog.

    • Chad says:

I don’t know what a dickcheezit is, to be honest. It doesn’t sound appealing. Though I haven’t met them, I don’t think that they are bad guys. I follow their logic and their arguments are sound and well thought out. I want everyone to be able to express themselves on this blog, as long as people do not use foul language or are completely disrespectful.

As for Murphy, I have been a fan my whole life. There is nothing more than I would like to see than for him to be enshrined in Cooperstown. I have read arguments on both sides of the fence of this debate. I feel if he would have not gone to Colorado and extended his career in mediocrity, then he would probably be in today. I also think that there have been players that have been elected, specifically Andre Dawson, that have not had as good of a career as Murph. I think that there is ample evidence to get him in, but I don’t see it happening. He will be enshrined in Atlanta and in the fans’ hearts, but not in Cooperstown.

  2. Sigurd Bryan says:

Chad, I think that’s a reasonable summation of Murph’s HOF candidacy, but do you really think his month and a half in Colorado (April and May 1993) is what so badly damaged his candidacy? I think it was his Philly years and the tail end of his Braves career, even, that probably did it.

If he’d been hit by a bus after his last great season in 1987, or even his very good 1988, I think he’d have been elected by acclamation. Timing. Boy, I don’t know. Murph and his family and his fans (including this one) are undoubtedly happy that didn’t happen, though.

  3. Chief Locked Heart says:

Am I counted as one of the hooligans?

I, along with countless Braves fans, was relieved when Seth Smith went to Oakland. With my record, though, he’ll probably have an all-star season…even though it looks like he’ll be handcuffed to Johnny Gomes in what should amount to a pretty good offensive platoon with some hilarious defensive moments.

When Scutaro went to CO for what looks like a bad pitcher, I just thought about how much better he is than our SS options this season and was a little frustrated. Hopefully now I can think of it like you, Chad, and just see it as us not trading them Prado for a 4th OF.

Dale Murphy didn’t have to die suddenly in 1989 to get more HoF consideration. He could have just said he couldn’t play on that knee anymore and took that Kirby Puckett type support. I think his case is somewhat an unconventional one, where supporters have to make arguments about how he was one of the best and most sensational players from an era that is underrepresented for some reason and that he isn’t given enough credit for playing CF for much of his career.
