According to an unnamed person with knowledge of the situation, Chipper Jones and his wife of 12 years, Sharon, have separated. When asked about the situation on Thursday, Jones declined comment. Sharon Jones has not been able to be reached for comment at this point, and there has been no official announcement from representatives of either party yet.
Jones went through a very public divorce with his first wife Karin, beginning in 1998, after he had admitted to an extramarital affair and having one child (Matthew, 14) out of wedlock.
Jones, 40, has four sons – including three with Sharon (Trey, 11, Shea, 7, and Tristan, 6) – and it appears he has no intention of airing the couples differences in a public forum, given the public scrutiny he underwent during his first divorce.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Jones, who is playing his final season with the Atlanta Braves, and public sentiment has clearly been on his side not only with Atlanta fans, but with baseball fans across the country as Jones makes his farewell tour of stadiums this season. At the end of spring training, he cited the desire to spend more time with his family as a big reason for his decision to retire.
Jones has had a couple of stints on the disabled list already this season, and had just come back from a leg injury at the end of a recent series with the Toronto Blue Jays in Atlanta. Currently he is hitting .304 with five home runs and 24 RBI in only 33 games played this season. He is a sentimental favorite to be selected to his 8th All-Star game, despite his lack of playing time and numbers that are lesser than others at his position in the National League.
