As of now, there’s been roster cuts going around in the NFL, and the Baltimore Ravens are a part of that. There’s been plenty of surprises about who teams have cut from the roster, but there’s other stories as well, such as one about Billy Bajema, a tight end for the Ravens. One month ago, he probably would have been cut, but the way he’s fought to stay on the team, it might take him from a nobody to a starter.
Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta are both injured, so that’s a little less competition for Bajema. To slide up to the number three spot on the depth chart he has to out perform two rookies, Matt Balasavage and Bruce Figgins. Dickson and Pitta both returned to practice, but didn’t really participate, so if they aren’t starting Thursday expect Bajema to start against a team that he knows well since it’s a team he used to play for.
Bajema has been in the league for eight years now, playing for the San Francisco 49ers and the St. Louis Rams before making a trip to Baltimore. He has actually played with the first string offense, starting in the last two preseason games.
His stats are surprisingly decent, being better than Balasavage and Figgins. This preseason he has a total of five catches for 38 yards, including a touchdown.
He has one more time to shine against the Rams this Thursday, with a good showing here he’s almost guaranteed a spot on the final roster. With someone as talented and as hard working as Bajema, the Ravens could use him as an extra target for Joe Flacco. Yes, Flacco has his talented wide receivers, but they aren’t always open, and hitting his tight end for a few yards is better than throwing the ball away or taking a sack.
I guess we’ll just have to wait until Friday before we finally find out who’s on the Ravens and who’s not. Personally, I would love to see Bajema on the roster, and I’m sure he’d want to see the same thing.
