Big 10 Football Coaches Pay Scale
The "Vest"
Big Ten Football coaches will take home over $22 million in compensation for the 2010 football season, and the figure doesn’t even count over $5 million in potential performance bonuses. USA Today published a Football Bowl Subdivision coaches salary scale that includes compensation the coaches receive from their school, potential bonuses as well as non-university compensation.
All of the Big 10 schools were listed with the exception of Northwestern, as a private school NU doesn’t have to release the information.
The “vest” at Ohio State, coach Jim Tressel, leads the way in Big 10 coaches with an income of $3,888,389, and he can make another $450,000 in incentive bonuses.
The university compensation includes money earned from coaching, camps, shoe deals, TV shows, etc… Bonuses are typically for reaching a set number of victories, awards, conference championships and other thresholds.

- Ron Zook, Illinois, $1,508,500, bonuses of $52,000.
- Kevin Wilson, Indiana, $1,200,000, bonuses NA.
- Joe Paterno, Penn State, $1,109,000, bonuses NA.
- Danny Hope, Purdue, $900,000, bonuses of $637,000.
- Tim Brewster, Minnesota, $808,000, bonuses of $1,050,000.
- Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern, NA
Minnesota coach Tim Brewster was recently fired.
