Buzz Williams, SMU and His Actual Texas Destination
Southern Methodist surprised college football when it managed to lure June Jones to Highland Park. Hiring Buzz Williams as the new head basketball coach would be on par with a Texas Western-level shocker.
The Mustangs fired Matt Doherty last week after six seasons and an 80-109 record. His claim to fame remains his tenure at North Carolina because he accomplished so little at SMU.
As the Dallas university approaches Big East entry in 2013, there’s no reason to settle this soon in the process.
With the ammunition of plenty of millionaire boosters, athletic director Steve Orsini can tout his pursuit of Marquette’s rising star before choosing on a more realistic candidate.
Until Williams denies interest though, if he responds at all, SMU’s alumni may continue dreaming of snatching a coach with Texas ties and Big East experience.
Buzz is a Lone Star State native with a penchant for two-stepping, especially on road courts.
He was heavily rumored to be in the mix for the Oklahoma job that eventually went to Lon Kruger.
Unfortunately for SMU, he’s also the recipient of a $2 million annual salary and probably only has eyes on one job in Texas.
Rick Barnes is pushing a decade and a half in Austin. He needs a deep NCAA Tournament run in the near future to combat whispers that his program is on an extended decline.
William is young, just 39, and talented enough to be patient for his pick of jobs if he decides to leave Marquette.
SMU might have their eyes on the Van Alstyne native, but it’s the program down I-35 that should eventually tempt the Golden Eagles charismatic country boy.
