Robert Griffin III came into Friday nights game with TCU determined to prove there’s more than two big time quarterbacks in the Big 12. Not only did he do that, but the Baylor Bears also proved they are a big time team.
Griffin drew first blood in the Heisman race by leading his squad to a 50-48 win at home over the Horned Frogs on national television. The Heisman may be a long shot for Griffin, but his numbers were most definitely Heisman like. The junior quarterback racked up 359 passing yards and threw for 5 touchdowns without an interception.
TCU trailed in the fourth quarter 47-23 but stormed back with a furious rally. After a Griffin fumble, TCU’s Ross Evans made a 27 yard field goal with 4:27 remaining giving his Frogs a 48-47 lead.
On the following Baylor possession Griffin was able to show why he is one of the most exciting athletes in the country. On 3rd and 10 from their own 20, the Bears got a big first down when Griffin through a backward pass to wide-out Kendall Wright who fired it back to Griffin up the middle for a 15 yard completion and a first down.
With 1:04 to play Baylor’s Aaron Jones converted on a 37 yard field goal to give the Bears the lead for good.
The Horned Frogs made it interesting in the final minute until Baylor’s Mike Hicks picked off TCU quarterback Casey Pachall and ran the clock down to 2 seconds.
With their biggest win in years, the Baylor Bears served notice to the rest of the country that despite the loss of two teams in the offseason, the Big 12 is still one of the toughest conferences in the nation. Perhaps the rest of the Big 12 should take notice as well.
Landry Jones, Ryan Tannehill, and Brandon Weedon…who are you leaving out when you say Griffin is out to prove their are more than two big time QBs? I know it’s not my boy Tannehill
