Big 12 Week in Review: Week 1 (Baylor Bears are for Real)
After the first week of play in the Big 12, the hot topic around the conference is centered around it’s uncertainty. Week 1 provided a few small disappointments but also gave us a couple of unexpected surprises.
The Baylor Bears showed us they are a serious player in the Big 12 with a 50-48 win over #14 TCU. Their superstar quarterback, Robert Griffin III showed he may be a serious player in the Heisman scene. Don’t laugh! RG3 has already made the biggest splash of the first week and still has big match-ups against Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas. He will have plenty of chances to make a big impression.
The Oklahoma Sooners proved that they deserve to be ranked number 1 nationally. We knew the Sooner offense would be impressive before we even knew who Dominique Whaley was. Whaley became the first OU walk-on to rush for over 100 yards in a game in 36 years and scored the most rushing TD’s in a game ever by an OU walk-on (4). Landry Jones was impressive in the Sooners 47-14 win despite missing his second best target, Kenny Stills, due to a suspension. The defense was impressive. The first unit held the Hurricane, who averaged over 40 pts per game a season ago, to 7 points after three quarters.
Texas A&M proved that the drama surrounding their impending exit from the Big 12 to the SEC was not a distraction by easily handling an improved SMU team 46-14. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill proved to be accurate and productive throwing for 246 yards on 21 of 26 attempts with 2 TD’s. The Aggies may have a target on their backs this year, but it appears they are just as motivated to prove their worth in their final year in the Big 12.
Oklahoma State definitely proved what we already knew in that they have one of the most powerful offenses in the country. Quarterback Brandon Weeden was his typical self throwing for 388 yards and 3 TD’s on 24 of 39 attempts. Wide-out Justin Blackmon also had a huge game with 8 receptions for 144 yards.
As for Missouri and Texas, we will have to take a wait and see approach. The Tigers were less than impressive in their 17-6 win over Miami (OH) and Longhorns took care of business by beating Rice 34-9. Only time will tell if the Horns can right the ship in Austin.
Texas Tech proved they can still score points in a 50-10 victory. The rest of the league, including Kansas State, showed they are just along for the ride.
