College Football Recruiting: Former Michigan WR Darryl Stonum Transferring to Baylor
Baylor picked up some reinforcement for their receiving corps over the weekend with the addition a Michigan transfer, Darryl Stonum, who announced on twitter he was headed to Waco.

At a minimum, Stonum’s transfer should add depth to a group looking to replace Kendall Wright who tallied 108 receptions and 1663 yards receiving during his senior season in 2011.
Stonum has just one year of eligibility remaining and is taking advantage of the NCAA’s graduate-exception rule since he finished his degree from Michigan this past spring. He will be able to take the field for Baylor when practice gets underway in August.
Stonum finished his Michigan career with 76 receptions and 1008 yards but comes to Baylor carrying just a bit of baggage.
He was forced to sit out last season due to disciplinary reasons stemming from his second drunken driving arrest and then dismissed from the team when he violated his probation. From WolverineNation’s report:
The May 2011 drunken driving arrest was Stonum’s second while at Michigan. The 21-year-old was previously arrested for operating a vehicle while visibly impaired in Sept. 2008. He then violated his probation from that arrest, landing him in jail for three days in the summer of 2010.
He looks to have his off-the-field troubles under control, however, and it appears Art Briles is willing at giving him a shot to revive his football career.
Not only will he bolster Baylor’s wide receiving corps, but he also could be a big factor on special teams. Stonum broke the Michigan single season record for kick-off return yardage in 2009 when he finished the season with 1,001 yards. For his career, he returned 62 kicks averaging 24.8 yards per return.
Taking a chance on a guy with Stonum’s past is always a gamble, but given the fact he stayed on course in school and was able to graduate, it looks like he’s earned a second chance. Hopefully this time he make the most of it.
