The Big East went 1-1 in their two non-conference games yesterday and the home team was able to win both of the conference match-ups. West Virginia had no trouble with Connecticut and Rutgers surprised almost everybody with such an easy victory against Pittsburgh. Here is a breakdown of yesterday’s Big East games.
West Virginia 43 Connecticut 16:
Connecticut (2-4, 0-1) was able to hang around for the first half and only trailed 10-9 at halftime. The second-half was all Mountaineers as West Virginia (5-1, 1-0) put 23 on the board in the third quarter and ten more in the fourth. Quarterback Geno Smith led the way once again with 450 yards passing and four touchdowns.
North Carolina 14 Louisville 7:
In somewhat of a surprise, Louisville (2-3) was able to hang tough on the road with North Carolina (5-1) for the entire game. The Tar Heels were never able to pull away and after totaling only 62 yards in the first half, The Tar Heels finally got into the scoring column midway through the third quarter.
Rutgers 34 Pittsburgh 10:
After a close, low scoring first half, Rutgers (4-1, 2-0) was able to take control of the game from Pittsburgh (3-3, 1-1) in the second half thanks in part to a defense that forces more turnovers than anybody in the country. The Scarlet Knights picked off Pittsburgh four times and took one to the house. Despite a 165 yard performance from Ray Graham, Pittsburgh was never in the game in the second half.
Syracuse 37 Tulane 34:
Syracuse (4-2, 0-1) took to the road for their final non-conference game of the season and snuck out with a close win over Tulane (2-4). The game was a back-and-forth, high-flying contest all day with the Orange coming out on top in the end thanks to a 21-yard Ross Krautman field goal as time expired.
