The Big East is finally closing in on sending out some official invitations for four schools to join their conference.
Big East officials are meeting once again today with Central Florida representatives in Cincinnati and are possibly set to send out invitations within the next week to 10 days.
The four schools that are expected to receive invites are Boise St, Air Force, Navy and Central Florida.
Adding Boise St. and the service academies will go a long way toward protecting the automatic bid of the Big East to a BCS bowl game.
This could also help solidify a conference that is at risk of crumbling completely.
In another intriguing move, the Big East doubled their exit fee for schools to leave the conference from five million to ten million dollars. This will hopefully help sway teams like Connecticut and Rutgers that are on the fence into staying in the new revamped conference.
If the Big East can add the four schools they are planning on sending out invitations to, there is a chance they will let Pittsburgh and Syracuse go instead of making them stay an extra two years, which is the requirement for schools to leave the conference.
Even if all four teams are added, the Big East may decide to keep the schools and have a 12-team league for the next two years. This could allow them time to add two more teams during that time span such as Temple and either Houston or SMU to replace Pittsburgh and Syracuse.
Either way, progress is finally being made on a conference that needs something to go their way before they fall apart completely.
