Big East Football: A Trio of Upsets Highlight the Weekend
There were only three Big East games this weekend, but in unlikely fashion, all of them could be considered surprise victories. With the World Series on break last night, the Big East was on center stage with West Virginia vs. Syracuse on ESPN and Rutgers vs. Louisville on ESPN2. Both of those along with today’s matchup between Cincinnati and South Florida were surprising finishes for many of those watching . Here is a recap of the three Big East games from this weekend.
Syracuse 49 West Virginia 23
The Mountaineers (5-2, 1-1) came into the game more than a two-touchdown favorite, but were manhandled from start to finish by the Orange (5-2, 1-1) as Syracuse won 49-23. Quarterback Ryan Nassib threw four touchdown passes, three of them to tight end Nick Provo and ran for one more. The Syracuse defense was able to hold West Virginia in check and while quarterback Geno Smith did pass for 338 yards and two touchdowns, he threw two big interceptions. Running Antwon Bailey controlled the game for Syracuse running for 125 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown.
Rutgers 16 Louisville 14
The Louisville (3-4, 1-1) defense continues to impress as the Cardinals held Rutgers (5-2, 2-1) in check winning 16-14. The Scarlet Knights were held to 298 total yards on offense and the Cardinals forced three interceptions that proved to be the difference in this one. Running back Jeremy Wright had a big game with 108 yards on only 11 carries for Louisville. Receiver Mohamed Sanu was huge for Rutgers, with 10 catches, 128 yards and a touchdown. It was not enough as the three interceptions by freshman quarterback Gary Nova was the difference in this one.
Cincinnati 37 South Florida 34
Cincinnati (6-1, 2-0) won only the second road game of the season for any team in conference play defeating South Florida (4-3, 0-3) in dramatic fashion 37-34. Quarterback Zach Collaros threw three touchdown passes and rushed for two more, including the game winner with 12 seconds remaining. He finished with 389 yards passing. South Florida quarterback B.J. Daniels had 409 yards and three touchdowns to go along with 54 rushing yards. Receiver Kenbrell Thompkins was big with 114 yards on six receptions for Cincinnati who totaled 507 yards for the game.
