Big East Football: Goodbye WVU, Hello UCF, SMU and Houston
West Virginia was officially announced as a member of the Big 12 on Friday and according to sources, would like to officially join the conference and leave the Big East on July 1, 2012.
This is happening despite the 27-month exit period that is required by all Big East teams. Syracuse and Pittsburgh are waiting for the 27-month period before they move to the ACC.
West Virginia has already paid half of the required exit fee and will pay the other half once they move to the Big 12.
ACC commissioner John Swofford has said he would respect the waiting period and the Big Easts bylaws. Interim Big 12 commissioner has not been so understanding.
If West Virginia decides to try and leave the Big East early, there could be legal ramifications to pay and it could get very ugly for all of those involved.
With West Virginia now gone, Big East commissioner John Marinatto visited Air Force and Boise St.
Getting Boise St. is very important if the Big East wants to keep their automatic qualifying status for the BCS.
BYU is officially out of the picture for the Big 12 and could move into the contention for a spot in the Big East.
It has also been reported that the Big East is going to officially offer invitations to Houston, UCF and SMU next week. These teams will begin play in the Big East in 2013.
This will get the Big East back to the eight teams they have right now and while the names they lost will be hard to make up for in basketball, the three new football schools are just as competitive with Houston being one of the best teams in the country.
The key for the Big East will be adding Boise St. and BYU. This will help retain their BCS status and keep some respectability for a conference desperately in need of some.

All of the new C-USA recruits WANT to be in the Big East !!! Most of the negative commenters only have a one dimmension view of the BE ! They’re forgeting that the basketball part of the BE is very valuable for colleges who become ALL Sports members !
I agree. People forget about how good the Big East is at basketball and just blow it off as a conference that is no good at football.
