Big East Football: San Diego St. Now Mentioned in Realignment Talks
BYU was mentioned in talks of Big East expansion in recent weeks, but another name came to light over the past couple days as a possible candidate for expansion.
That school is San Diego St.
Many people are hesitant to consider San Diego St. a team that would benefit the Big East, but they are a school that would greatly enhance the basketball Big East with the loss of two of their top schools Pittsburgh and Syracuse.
San Diego St. is not only a viable football program, but is an excellent basketball school. They made the Sweet 16 last season before falling to eventual National Champion Connecticut.
They also made the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and are a program on the rise under head coach Steve Fisher.
The addition would expand the Big East from coast to coast which may be more beneficial than some people think and would put San Diego St. on the map for basketball recruiting.
BYU, Houston and Boise St. will be excellent additions for football, but the league must look to other places so they can improve on basketball which will be hurting from the losses of West Virginia, Syracuse and Pittsburgh.
San Diego St. would fit that mold perfectly, along with a team like Temple who not only is a football program on the rise, but has been one of the biggest basketball powers over the past 30 seasons.
So while initially, it might not look like San Diego St. is a viable option for expansion, the benefits they will bring on the hardwood will help a conference that needs to look further than just the football field.

What is taking so long for the Big East to make the formal announcements..are they going to fiddle around and let other conferences raid it again
I think the Big East wants to make a joint announcement – PLUS, I think it behooves them to slow the WVU movement to the Big 12 for greater concessions. The Big East is not mandated a size for next season, however the Big 12 is to meet their television obligations. I think they’d love to have WVU or the Big 12 cover exit fees for the C’USA teams to get in the Big East next year.
Yes good points. Thanks for the comment.
That is what I am worried about. They need to do something quick and get the good teams that are still left.
san diego st makes sense for football only. This author lost all credibility by suggesting SDSU for BB. I think there are enough schools east of the Mississippi (ie Temple or Memphis) that are better fits geographically for all sports.
BE schools won’t be happy to send their olympic sports to the west coast for a conference game.
Maybe so, but Temple and Memphis have already been mentioned.
If the Big East signs with Comcast/NBC I believe with the additions of BYU, BSU, SDSU,UCF,SMU,and Houston in fives years the Big East football will become a major player again.
As for SDSU joining the Conference, that would be great b/c of recruiting. The Big East would have a small foothold in Texas, Florida, New Jersey, Ohio, and California.
Great article keep up the great work.
Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it. I couldn’t agree with you more. These schools are solid programs that will improve the Big East in football. Losing West Virginia is a big loss, but Syracuse and Pittsburgh are no better off in football than BYU and Houston. Boise St. more than makes up for the loss of West Virginia.
