Big East Football: Boise State, Four Others Set to Join Conference
After what has seemed like months of talks and debate, the Big East is set to officially add five teams to the conference beginning in 2013.
The league will add Boise St. and San Diego St. for football only and add Houston, UCF and SMU for all sports.
Navy is expected to be the sixth team added for football only after some loose ends are tied up.
The addition of these teams will at least save the Big East for the time being and while the future of the Big East is still uncertain, it looks like there will not be a complete crumbling of the league.
The conference will be looking to add one more team in order to get to a 12-team football conference.
That final team would be Air Force if all things go as planned.
The league would then expand into an east and west division with Boise St, San Diego St, Houston, SMU, Air Force and Louisville in the west. Cincinnati, UCF, South Florida, Rutgers, Connecticut and Navy would be in the east.
As things stand now, Syracuse and Pittsburgh will stay for the mandatory 27-month waiting period and still have two more football seasons in the Big East.
West Virgina will likely have to do the same thing unless they can win a court battle to give them the ability to leave for the Big 12 earlier than expected.
While the conference has clearly gotten stronger in football, the loss of Syracuse and Pittsburgh in basketball will be hard to replace, which is why Louisville head coach Rick Pitino is clamoring for the league to add Temple or Memphis in order to strengthen the basketball part of the conference.
Who will fill the final two holes remains to be seen, but as it looks now, Air Force and Navy are the leading contenders.
At least for the time being, the Big East has begun to stabilize itself, possibly well enough to save the league.
