Big East Football: More to Come as Dominoes Continue to Fall
After Houston, Boise St, SMU, UCF and San Diego St. committed to the Big East, the conference dominoes have started to fall.
The Big East is still waiting to hear from Navy as a football only school. That would leave them with 11 teams, meaning the conference is looking for another.
The top contenders include East Carolina, Memphis and Temple. Temple and Memphis would be viable options, particularly for their success on the basketball court.
The Big East could also be looking for more teams with the assumption that the Big 12 will be trying to expand to 12 teams from the ten they are left with.
Louisville is a leading candidate to join the Big 12 next and there is also a possibility that Cincinnati would have a shot to go with them.
The ACC is now at 14-teams after adding Pittsburgh and Syracuse. There is talk that they will eventually expand to 16-teams and if they can convince Notre Dame to join the conference, their next target would be Connecticut.
There is also talk of a possible merger between Conference USA after the departure of SMU, Houston and UCF and the Mountain West after losing San Diego St. and Boise St.
These conferences took the worst of any of the expansion and joining forces would be the best idea for both of these leagues.
While it may have seemed like the expansion was over at least for the time being, with the addition of these five teams, there is still much more to come.
It looks like we are a long way away from being finished with all of the expansion, and it may still be possible that four or five mega-conferences emerge in the end.
