Big East Football: West Virginia Trying to Break Ties with Big East
The West Virginia Mountaineers can’t get out of the Big East quick enough.
They have now asked a Rhode Island judge to dismiss a lawsuit that was recently filed by the Big East to prevent West Virginia from making a quick exit of the conference without abiding by the 27-month waiting period.
The Mountaineers are trying leave immediately effective in the fall of 2012 so they can join the conference before the start of the next football season.
West Virginia originally sued the conference in Mongolia County Circuit Court in West Virginia. They were trying to invalidate a lawsuit requiring them to give notice of at least 27 months before leaving the conference.
A hearing is scheduled for Monday.
West Virginia has already paid half of the required five million dollar exit fee to leave the Big East. They are complaining that by accepting their payment, the Big East has virtually agreed to immediate withdrawal for West Virginia.
A decision should be known shortly as to whether or not the Mountaineers will be allowed to leave the conference immediately without having to suffer any major repercussions in the court of law.
West Virginia will be representing the Big East in the Orange Bowl against Clemson for what could possibly be the final time.
If the Mountaineers are unable to join the Big 12 immediately, they will have to play two more football seasons in the Big East before legally being allowed to leave the conference.
