Big East Football: Rutgers Impressive in Pinstripe Bowl Victory
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights became the first team from the Big East to win a bowl game when they knocked off Iowa State at Yankee Stadium 20-13 in a defensive battle.
Rutgers came into the game with one of the top defenses in the country and that unit did not disappoint.
They had Iowa State floundering on offense for most of the game and put on an impressive showing in the South Bronx in what was as close to a home game as Rutgers could get.
An 86-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chas Dodd to wide receiver Brandon Coleman sealed the deal with just under six minutes to go and put the Scarlet Knights ahead 27-13.
Those were the final points of the game as Rutgers held off Iowa State the rest of the way or a 27-13 victory.
That lead proved to be too much to overcome as the Iowa State offense was no match for Rutgers.
After falling behind 6-0 on two long field goals at the beginning of the first quarter, Rutgers dominated the middle part of the game and led 20-6 heading into the fourth quarter.
One of the many talented young players in the Big East paced the way for Rutgers throughout. Sophomore running back Jawan Jamison carried the load for the Scarlet Knights.
He rushed for two touchdowns in the second quarter and had 27 carries for 134 yards on the day.
Star receiver Mohamed Sanu caught six passes for 80 yards, but was kept out of the end zone.
Co-Big East defensive player of the year Khaseem Greene was carted off the field with just under five minutes to go after suffering what appeared to be a serious injury to his right ankle.
He already had 13 tackles on the game.
Rutgers finished the season 9-4 after being predicted to finish dead last in the Big East.
