College Football Bowl Predictions Through Dec. 24
Bowl season kicks off Saturday and in celebration of Craig James vacating his post at ESPN, let me yell loudly about stuff I seem to know very little about.
New Mexico Bowl: Temple v. Wyoming
Traditional titans of college football, these two 8-4 squads match up in a locale that comes in right behind the Hawaii Bowl for traveling fans. Temple has a chance at a Big East invite so impressing on national television wouldn’t hurt. Steve Addazio’s coaching renaissance continues with an Owls victory.
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: Ohio v. Utah State
Aren’t bowl sponsors the best? Fame and Idaho don’t mix much unless Boise State or Napoleon Dynamite gets involved. And since I have little to offer on either of these teams, I’ll take Ohio because I still think Ohio head coach Frank Solich earned a raw deal from Nebraska.
New Orleans Bowl: San Diego State v. Louisiana-Lafayette
Mark Hudspeth received a long look from Ole Miss for his work this year with the Ragin Cajuns’. A bowl win close to home would cap off a stellar 2011 for ULaLa but Aztecs quarterback Ryan Lindley has an NFL future. He’ll show why in a San Diego State victory.
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl: Florida International v. Marshall
Golden Panthers wideout T.Y. Hilton exploded the first two weeks of the season (14 receptions, 333 yards, 3 touchdowns) before an injured leg slowed him. He’s healthy again and that’s bad news for the Thundering Herd who attempt to stop FIU from posting only their second bowl win in school history.
Unless Chad Pennington and Randy Moss are suiting up, they won’t.
Poinsettia Bowl: TCU v. Louisiana Tech
The Horned Frogs flew under the radar in 2011 after an opening loss to Robert Griffin III and Baylor. Gary Patterson’s team then nearly snuck in as an at-large BCS participant when Houston lost in the C-USA championship. San Diego isn’t the Sugar Bowl but Casey Pachall’s quick maturation means a long night for Louisiana Tech regardless of coast.
MAACO Las Vegas Bowl: Boise State v. Arizona State
A battle of coaching stability against coaching embarrassment in Sin City. The Sun Devils spent 17 days on their search to settle for ramblin’ man Todd Graham. Chris Petersen doesn’t listen when schools throw $4 million offers at him.
Kellen Moore’s final game as a Bronco won’t be a breeze early, Arizona State does sport a stingy defense, though he’ll still add to his NCAA record for wins. Vontaze Burfict and his Sun Devil crew are the height of undisciplined. That’s quite the opposite of Boise State.
Hawaii Bowl: Southern Miss v. Nevada
Larry Fedora, on his way to North Carolina, will coach the Golden Eagles and I’m guessing the location might have played a role. Between trips to the beach, Southern Miss finds time to score plenty and leave Nevada wondering how it can entice Colin Kaepernick back to school.
